Te Wheke | Māori Art for Sale
Print on museum archival paper or canvas | signed limited edition (only 95 prints available)
Inspired by the book of the same title by Dr.Rangimarie (Rose) Pere this painting depicts a god-like infant playing with fire. Te Wheke draws upon the infinite wisdom of the universe by focusing on the central image of a baby wielding an octopus (te wheke) in one hand and a burning stick of fire in the other. The octopus with its eight tentacles represents different forms of health and well-being and the flame represents light and knowledge. The geometric shapes especially the triangles of colour reflect the power of this baby to be in multiple dimensions simultaneously. The painting invokes various shades of blues and yellow while drawing our attention to the figure of the tentacled creature whose arms reach lovingly across the universe. This painting is based on innocence and a playfulness that is seen only with children as they taste and experiment with the world around them.
